I had the pleasure of screening Marvel‘s latest movie, Black Panther, and I have to say I am so glad that this film was released. As a media analyst (since that is the focal point of my dissertation work), it is so pivotal for these representations to be present and to be ACCURATE! Stan Lee, Ryan Coogler, and the entire cast did a spectacular job of offering insight into being and living black, not only in America, but on a global scale.
What I loved most was the focus on Black women! My dissertation research is also focused on Black women and so my attention is heightened when Black women are given the proper recognition they deserve. The women are warriors. They are fighting. They are respected, not only by other women but most importantly by men. A young Black women is the overseer of all the technology of a country! Seeing these Black queens be loved and appreciated made me so happy.
I also loved that we see the dissonance between characters. It is not uncommon for individuals to get along but there is a rhetoric that all Black people need to get along and we do not! It’s okay to not like each other.
In a very subtle manner, they addressed how the media can show inaccurate portrayals of real life. Again, with this being my dissertation research, I am here for it!
There were some key quotes in the film that had me screaming “AMEN” and clapping throughout but like I said I am not spoiling the film for those that have yet to see it. I would definitely recommend everyone to see the film even if they are not a comic book buff. You really don’t need much back story to understand the film. It is funny and warming to see Black people looking so regal.
