Mo’nique visits Power 105.1‘s The Breakfast Club to confront Charlemagne (Leonard) about giving her “Donkey of the Day”.
In the 45 minute interview, Mo’nique maintains her claims for the boycott of Netflix for racial and color bias. On the other hand, Charlemagne also stands by his claim of giving Mo’nique “Donkey of the day”.
In my opinion, I agree with Charlemagne but I also acknowledge key points made by Mo’nique. Mo’nique only asked for the boycott following her rejection, which has me believe if she was given the money she felt she deserved she would be pushing us to watch her Netflix special. This is the greatest disconnect for me. I agree with Charlemagne in that Mo’nique is taking her individualized situation to try and generally attack the system, which there is no problem with but had things went in her favor we wouldn’t be addressing it. I know I personally do not want to see a Mo’nique comedy special but I think Mo’nique doesn’t understand the magnitude of a boycott to effect change. By boycotting Netflix we also take away from our brothers and sisters that are having success on the platform.
I agree that there is racial and gender bias in the entertainment industry. That’s apparent and has been around since the beginning of time. To highlight this issue, Monique could have taken a very different stance that I think would have been better for her agenda and adhering to the root of the problem.
