Little Fires Everywhere has made it to many best seller’s list. This book was also highly suggested on a number of different platforms. This book has a 4.2/5 star rating on GoodReads and is even gearing up to be a limited series starring Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington. With such accolades, I felt I should give this book a read.
The book is set in Shaker Heights, Ohio during the 1990s. The author grew up in Shaker Heights and based on her description seems like a very odd town, very Stepford Wives-esque. The story follows the coming together of two families through their children’s friendships, while uncovering the little fires that exist in their lives. The topics explored are teen pregnancy, teen death, surrogacy, sex, and perfectionism, just to name a few.
After reading this book, I was very indifferent on whether or not I liked it. It was absolutely written impeccably! The author had such a fluid style of going back and forth in the past and present as well as between characters. However, there was no part of the story that truly resonated with me. I think everything was laid out perfectly but just didn’t hit home.
This is not to say that the book is not a good book. I would recommend it to others if they were interested. It would be interesting to see how this plays out as a movie or series. It can either go really well or really wrong. I would also probably read a part two, if one existed. I want to know what happens next with all of the characters.
