This is one of the best books that I have read this year so far! “The Hate U Give” illuminates the social and political climate that is effecting Black youth and Black people in America.
The story follows Starr and how she has to navigate being the key witness in the murder of her childhood as he is killed by the police. She is caught between being quiet and speaking out about the death of her unarmed friend. This story is too familiar for Black people in America. As I was reading it, I not only saw myself in Starr but I empathized with her and loved seeing her development and growth.
I highly recommend you make an effort to read this one! It is a quick read. I finished the book in just four days. It is a page turner and you definitely don’t want to put it down.
I send a warm thank you to Angie Thomas for being forthright in addresing the tensions that exist in being an activist but also being afraid to speak out on social and political issues. I thank her for presenting, what I think, is a positive and authentic representation of a Black girl. I am so here for this book and I am encouraging every person that reads this post to also go see the movie.
The movie will release in theaters October 19th. Go see it!
