The regular, degular girl from the Bronx has captured our ears and hearts to the point that the world cannot deny that Cardi B is a SUPERSTAR!
You may know Cardi B from her breakthrough hit, Bodak Yellow, but my first introduction to the loud, raunchy personality was on Instagram as she ranted about how “a hoe never gets cold”. Cardi B said most of the things we, as women, were thinking but in a comical way. Girls of color are often told to diminish their personalities and subdue the effects of their environmental conditions, but Cardi truly didn’t, and doesn’t, care and stays authentic to who she is.
I was apprehensive when Cardi landed a role on Love and Hip Hop New York because we all know reality TV can lead to downfall. However, the world was able to see how authentic and genuine she truly is. It is an undeniable characteristic that keeps you wanting to root for her. She represents and normalizes all the girls from the hood who speak in broken English or AAVE (African-American Vernacular English), who no longer have to hide their true identities out of fear of being ridiculed, excluded or moving forward in the world.
Many people thought that the fight at New York Fashion week would be the end of her career. Many believed that there was no way that she would be able to maintain a positive public persona following a physical alteration which left her with a knot on her head and shoeless. Yet nearly six months following the fight and Cardi is bigger than all parties involved. Her star power is so undeniable that she was able to get kicked out the party and still end up on the cover. ICONIC!
On this night, Cardi B has won Best Rap Album for her debut Invasion of Privacy at the Grammys. She is solidifying her stake in music and pop culture history. She is representing for the all the AfroLatinas and doing it unapologetically. She continues to win because she seems to have a greater understanding that it is bigger than herself. She is representing for all us regular, degular girls out there!
Keep going sis because I am rooting for you!
