I recently downloaded Libby, an app that every avid reader should have. I browsed the list of books that I was interested in and had yet to read. After realizing that 32 Candles was available AND on audiobook, I was excited.
This book follows the life of Davida “Davie” Jones as she comes into her own after escaping abuse and ridicule in her childhood. The story highlights the ways trauma in childhood and adolescence can have lasting effects on adulthood and, consequently, can lead to many terrible and regretful decisions.
Would I recommend this book?
Yes. The mess that Davida put herself in is comical. This book, both subtle and overt, highlights issues of colorism, depression, incest, and social class just to name a few. The greatest takeaway I had from this book is that even after making “mistakes”, it is just as noble to make things right.
Sidebar: If you do not already, go an get a library card. There are two very important apps to download, Hoopla and Libby, but only if you have library access. I have read 4 books already because of these apps. It is great!
