I saw this book on a variety of different platforms, with fairly great reviews but it really didn’t do it for me.
I am not one to spoil books but to understand my frustrations with this book I have to give you the run down.
So…
In sum, this woman, who had a terrible pregnancy, ends up with a daughter who is mute but partly possessed by a French witch and does very bad things to the mom because she only wants the affection of the dad. Sounds like it would be filled with drama but it really does not live up to anything. When I first started reading this book, I thought that it was going to be reminiscent of the movie “Orphan”, where the daughter tries to have sex with the dad. It’s real perverted but that’s what I thought was going to happen. Then I started to think maybe the daughter would successfully kill the mom. While the daughter had all these plans of killing her it never happens. The daughter is sent to a facility far away and that’s it. There’s no real climax to it all. I wanted drama!
Another added layer is that the daughter is mute but talks when she is wants to be the French witch and only to the mom. This added to the suspense of the story but never resulted in anything horrifying.
The real kicker is the ignorance of the father. He is the dumbest and most naive person. Throughout the book all he did was piss me off because he played into the games of the daughter. While the mom had instances where she was being just as dumb, the dad was the dumbest.
I thought I would enjoy this but I didn’t. I would give it 3/5 stars. If you read the book, what did you like about it?
