There was a list floating around social media of Nipsey Hussle’s favorite books and this one topped the list. I had not heard of the book previously but knew that I wanted to read it because Nip’s mind was well beyond his years.
Released in 1969, we follow Dan Freeman as he lives a double life – one where he overworks and overachieves to impress Whites and the other where he is passionate about the revolution of Black people. The story itself is very crazy so that’s all I’m going to share. READ IT!
As I was reading this story, it made perfect sense that this would allegedly be one of Nipsey’s favorite books. Freeman’s main goal is to make sure the Black community is self-sufficient without relying on the White man. Nipsey did this very well by making sure his community thrived.
The sad reality is that the scenarios in the book still hold true nearly 50 years later. Black people are still,in many ways, subordinate to White people. Police are still policing the ghetto in ways that are not for the people. However, if we were to take Freeman’s approach would be better off as a group of people? As a society?
I highly recommend this book. I do not recommend reading the digital version as it is poorly put together. I may need to get a hard copy and add to my book collection.
