Eyelashes can take a simple look from basic to baddie, but many of us cannot commit to individual lashes so we only wear strip lashes. I have very sensitive eyes that I am constantly rubbing or fiddling with my contacts so individual lashes are not the best for me. However, I love strip lashes. They are challenging at first, but once you get the hang of it, it’s a breeze. Here are 5 tips that will make you a pro at applying strip eyelashes.
#1 Wrap the lash around something or create a curve before applying
Many lashes straight out the box are not shaped to fit the natural curve of our eyes. When you take the lashes out of the box, be sure to wrap them around an object or create an overexaggerated curve to, essentially, loosen them up. This will help to make them form to the curve of your eyes easier. Also, you only really need to do this once. After wearing a pair of lashes once, especially for a lengthy amount of time, you won’t have to worry about them fitting your eye anymore. I will quickly wiggle lashes around for 30 seconds to one minute to loosen them up. This step definitely makes lash application a whole lot easier.
#2 Let the glue get tacky
This tip is key! Before applying your lashes, you want the glue to get tacky, or more dry. What often happens is you apply the glue and go straight to applying and now your eyelash is shifting all around your eye. Wait about 30 seconds to one minute and then put your lashes on. My favorite lash glue is Duo. I recently purchased an eyeliner that doubles as glue from Black-owned business, Vixened by Vanessa.
Bonus tip: Secure your lashes from outer to inner corner.
I find that it is so much easier to secure your lashes from outer to inner. Personally, the inner corner gives me the most trouble when putting on lashes so by setting the outer in place, it makes it just slightly easier because the lash isn’t sliding around. My method is to set the lash in the middle of my lash line, secure the outer edge and then secure the inner corner. In the comments, let me know your method!
#3 Get a good pair of tweezers
Some people like to use their fingers. I like to use a good pair of tweezers. I love the tweezers from K Beauty by Kandace (personal bias) but if you have a good pair of tweezers it makes applying lashes so much easier. Lash tweezers are particularly useful because they are designed to grip the entire lash for optimal application. Just in case you don’t have a pair, you can buy the Stick It Tweezers from K Beauty by Kandace.
#4 Position the mirror so that you are looking down
Sometime last year, Draya Michelle shared this tip when applying lashes on IG and it is really a game changer. By positioning the mirror so that you are looking down, it helps you get closer to the lash line opposed to you looking straight forward into the mirror. I use a small handheld mirror (like the one here) when I am doing my makeup. It really makes the lash application easier.
#5 Use dishwashing liquid to clean your lashes
You should be able to wear your lashes more than once with good maintenance. In most cases, there will be glue build up or residue. To get that off, I use a little bit of dishwashing liquid diluted with water. This method gets most of the residue off. I also use dishwashing liquid to clean my makeup brushes. It really gets the job done.
