Halloween is right around the corner. With many cities cancelling trick or treating plans for the littles ones, and still technically being in a pandemic, it’s hard to get into the Halloween spirit, especially thinking of bad, last-minute costumes. Thankfully, there are so many great movies to watch at home, or in a drive-in, that can awaken those spooky feelings.
My favorite Halloween movies are all ages friendly. I’m a scaredy cat. I don’t like to be scared nor do I like a lot of gore. So cozy up with the family and enjoy.
Monster House
I absolutely love this movie! While it takes place around Halloween, I truly believe that this is a love story. Mr. Nebbercracker’s loved his wife and therefore he loved his house. In my adult age I now know that the relationship between Mr. Nebbercracker and his house was a tad toxic, but when you don’t want to let the love go that’s what happens. Also Chowder was so funny!
This movie also taught me so much about anatomy. Who knew that dangly thang that swing in the back of our throats was a uvula before Monster House?! I love animated films that have adult humor and innuendos. This movie does it! Watch it on Hulu.
Casper
Casper is just one of those movies that brings up all the nostalgia of being a child in the 90s. It is one of my favorites to get me into the Halloween mood. Christina Ricci really played that role so well. My favorite were the uncles. Yes, they were the villains but I loved their banter. My favorite scene is when Casper makes the elaborate breakfast and the uncles come in and create pure havoc.
Addams Family Values
Every few months I watch the masterpiece that is Addams Family Values. This movie was also a big part of my childhood and solidified my love for Morticia and Wednesday Addams. While the Addams are a spooky unconventional family, there’s no question that they don’t ride for their own. I love that! The storyline with Debbie and Fester offered a glimpse into the extent that women would go to get money. So crazy! This movie is also on Hulu right now.
Nightmare before Christmas
I love watching this movie around Halloween because it is the perfect transition into holiday season. Christmas is my ultimate favorite holiday but I also like to celebrate Halloween so Nightmare Before Christmas gives us the best of both worlds. The boogie man in this movie used to really frighten me. I was terrified! I still don’t care for that part now as an adult. I do think Jack was tripping when he thought he could be Santa Claus. Nightmare before Christmas offer the best message of staying in your lane. Log onto Disney Plus and get to watching.
Hocus Pocus
The most quintessential Halloween movie is Hocus Pocus. I do not let Halloween season go by where I do not watch this movie. As an adult, it’s funny thinking about how Max being a virgin caused all the chaos. What’s even crazier is that’s the storyline in what can be considered a kid’s movie. The Sanderson sisters really can not be touched though. I am excited for their reunion. Hocus Pocus is also on Disney Plus.
