Every year we hear about the importance of elections but it seems that this election is more important than ever. The anxiety, the stress, and all the madness surrounding elections heightens the need to find activities that help you decompress. In this blog post, I am sharing some activities that I have found to help during this entire election process. Maybe they can be of help to you as well.
Coloring
Adult color books are my absolute favorite. In kindergarten, we really didn’t take advantage of all the uninterrupted time to just sit and color. Coloring is so calming and peaceful. The peace that comes from just sitting down and coloring plus the beautiful masterpiece you then create is so fulfilling. I recently bought some really cool coloring books.
Read
Anyone that really knows me, knows that I love to read a good book! Getting lost in someone else’s madness is the perfect way to avoid all the troubles of the real world. I have been able to read 33 books this year, which helped me beat my goal of 30. I’m currently reading Grown by Tiffany Jackson. If you have never read any of Tiffany Jackson’s books, I HIGHLY recommend that you head over to your favorite bookseller now!
Watch a good movie or tv
While you can’t actually go to the movie theater, there are a variety of movies on streaming services. As always, there are a lot of TV shows too. Put your phone down and watch something that will bring you joy. I’ve been binge watching Real Housewives of Atlanta from the beginning and boy the laughs are hilarious. I Just finished the season where Claudia Jordan and Nene have their tiff and that is hilarious.
I also have started watching Schitt’s Creek again because Moira Rose. Moira is goals!
Meditate
While I am not a pro at this, I know that it is very effective for some people. Sitting still, with no phone or distractions, can be a good way to recenter and set intentions for the day or night. Some people do guided meditations or have mantras set for themselves. Find whatever is effective for you.
Stay off Social Media
While social media is how many of receive our news, it’s probably best that you take a break for some hours, a day, or a few days. I know I’ll probably tune in and tune out.
There’s truly no certainty in the outcome of this election, and I believe that either way the outcome will be overwhelming. Find your joy. This year has been enough of a wild ride, but unfortunately, it’s only the beginning.
