I’m not sure how I feel about the latest novel, Grown, from Tiffany Jackson. The story was a bit too familiar as well as predictable. In this post, I will share my opinions about the book.
I was first introduced to Tiffany Jackson when I read Monday is Not Coming. When I tell you that this book had me shook for a very long time. I absolutely loved it. I feel deeper in love with her work when I read Allegedly. The excitement that I had for this book was unmatched because I absolutely loved the cover. Anyone that knows me, knows I am gold bamboo earrings obsessive. However, after reading the book, I do not think this was Tiffany’s best.
Grown is a story about aspiring teenage singer, Enchanted Jones, who falls into an entanglement with a much older pop star. He promises her career advancement but instead gets her addicted to lean, altering her appearance, and just abusing her emotionally and physically.
Had we not experienced the media circus surrounding a Chicago singer with a similar story, I think this would have been an interesting story to tell. Not that this story is not one to tell because I know that many women, Black women particularly, are experiencing this level of abuse but I just thought Jackson would bring a more interesting and fresh perspective.
Every author can’t grand slam everytime. I hope that her next book is the bounce back. Being that she is a Black woman author, I am also going to support her.
