Goyard – The ‘IT Girl’ Staple

Intended to be a beach bag, the Goyard St. Louis bag has become an “It Girl” staple in every fashionistas purse collection. The bag is made of complete canvas which makes it very flexible and very versatile. The brand has been spotted on numerous celebrities, but the one that is seen the most is the St. Louis tote. 

My favorite thing about the St. Louis tote is that it looks even better with age. Something about the way it folds just looks so good. I knew that one day I would add this bag to my collection.  

Sizing

The St. Louis tote comes in two sizes, PM and GM. PM is the smaller of the two. I decided to get the GM size because I wanted this bag to be my everyday bag. This bag has since become my travel bag since I am currently working from home. I figured that the bigger the bag the more junk I can put into it. One life saver is getting a bag organizer. I got mine from Amazon. This has helped to not only keep the shape of my bag but to also help with things not getting lost in the bottom of my bag. I got the bag organizer in X-large. 

Goyard St. Louis vs. Louis Vuitton Neverfull

I did consider whether or not I should get the Goyard St. Louis or the Louis Vuitton Neverfull. While both bags are often compared to one another, I don’t think that they are comparable. While they are both canvas, the Neverfull has more structure than the St. Louis. 

If structure is something that you are interested in, you might want to consider the Goyard Artois bag. The Artois bag has a stiffer bottom in comparison to the St. Louis. 

Everyone has a Neverfull. It’s almost like an out-of-highschool starter bag. At my current age, I felt that it was too elementary for me to go forth buying one. I had one many years ago, which I absolutely loved, but knew that I would be tired of it quickly. The biggest difference is price. The Neverfull is about a thousand dollars more than the Goyard St. Louis bag. 

Price 

Goyard is very cryptic about the price of their items. If you go online, you cannot see the cost of this bag. Additionally, if you go into the store, you cannot take photos. This makes it difficult to know exactly how much things cost. I believe this is intentionally done so that Goyard can uphold the silent luxury allure of the brand. 

The St. Louis tote comes in a variety of colors. There are the “classic” colors, which include black. Then there are the non-classic colors that include the more vibrant colors like red, orange, green, and yellow. The non-classic colors are more expensive than classic colors. I purchased the classic black in the largest size, GM, with tan lettering. After taxes, the bag cost just over $1,600. 

BEWARE: Since Goyard is very secretive about their prices, most people assume that the bags are more expensive than they really are. When I decided that I was going to purchase the bag, I was considering getting it on the reseller’s market. I looked at a few of my favorite consignment sites, like Fashionphile, and then something told me to just go to the Goyard store. I am fortunate to live in a city that has a Goyard store, which can be difficult for other people. The mark-up of the St. Louis tote, specifically on resale sites, is about $600 to $800 over the asking price. My suggestion would be to just buy the tote from Goyard. 

Where to Buy

I wanted to make my purchase a whole experience. In 2020, I had booked a trip to go to Paris where I was going to go to the Goyard store to buy my bag. As you know, public health crisis canceled many travel plans. So instead I bought my bag domestically where I bought my tote from Goyard in Beverly Hills. I did start the process of buying the tote from their website. Once you fill out the form, someone will contact you on moving forward with the purchase. 

Maintenance

Like most luxury purchases, you can take your bag to Goyard for repairs. While in line when I went to purchase my bag, a woman in front of me was dropping off her bag for strap repair and to touch up the wear at the corners. This was reassuring that I could go get repairs if there were any issues with my bag. 

Unboxing

This bag has been on my luxury bag wishlist for a long time. I am so happy with my purchase and absolutely love my bag. I still want a Goyard pouch, which I may wait to purchase whenever I get to Paris.
