When an accidental collision sparks a romance, you know that you are in for a good read. I really enjoyed reading “Do You Take This Man” by Denise Williams.
Summary
In this book, RJ, a divorce lawyer, part-time wedding officiant, collides with Lear, a former football event planner now wedding planner. They had no idea that they would be working together at the time of their collision. After getting to no one another, they engage in a completely physical relationship. Over time, it becomes more difficult to keep
Being Vulnerable is Difficult
RJ and Lear are very career driven individuals. They both had been hurt by someone they trusted and loved. In this book, Lear makes more of an effort to initiate a more intimate relationship while RJ works overtime to keep her guard up. Being vulnerable is extremely difficult. It requires being honest about your feelings and confronting those feelings head on. RJ had just gotten out of a stagnant relationship. She thought this relationship would be her forever relationship. However, when her former beau, Case, who had a viral engagement where he said that he finally felt free in his new relationship, RJ had to realize that
I truly sympathize with RJ’s tussle with being vulnerable. As a Black woman, who has a somewhat impressive list of accomplishments, I am so guarded when it comes to dating. I have no desire to waste my time. As a result, I am forever single and most relationships are short-lived because I am constantly waiting on the other foot to drop. I loved how the author showcased RJ navigating this. But also showcasing how Lear had to also navigate returning to himself after finding out that he was not the father of his girl friend’s baby. We often vilify men for being vulnerable. I loved that readers were able to see that when it becomes too much to bear, men can also lean on their partner or even turn to their family.
Review
I really enjoyed this book. If you enjoy Jasmine Guillory books you will enjoy this title. While it is a romantic comedy, it still has elements that are relatable and don’t feel unrealistic. The author makes a concerted effort to show Black success, LGBTQIA+ love and happiness, as well as navigating some of the more tough emotions. This is my first time reading a book by this author and I am definitely interested in reading more.
