I am slowly progressing to meeting my GoodReads reading goal of forty books. In the month of September I was able to read four good ones.
Mad Honey by Jodi Picoult
This is my first time reading anything by Jodi and I know she has created a cult following. This was my book club book for the month and I did not have any real expectations. Without giving away the plot too much, I can say that Jodi and her additional writers do a very good job of offering a differing perspective that I never had prior to reading this book. I love that this book could initiate a lot of dialogue on navigating sexuality, mental health, and relationships. I would definitely read more of Jodi’s work.
Good Bad Girl by Alice Feeney
After reading Daisy Darker, I now have a special place in my reader’s heart for Alice Feeney. She knows how to write a story with a twist and Good Bad Girl is no different. The story unfolds really nicely but it does take to long to get to the twist. Nonetheless it was a great story.
I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy
I am not familiar with Jennette McCurdy but the title of the book definitely piqued my interest. Being a child star and, most importantly, the breadwinner of the familiar, Jennette became susceptible to alcoholism and an eating disorder. Ultimately this book highlight the ways that parents determination for their child’s success can also push them too far.
Finding Me by Viola Davis
This was my favorite read of the month. Viola Davis’ book is so inspiring. I was not aware of her upbringing and within her book she reveals how she was raised in extreme poverty. Despite these conditions, she manifested the life that she wanted and worked hard until she got it. I listened to this book through the Libby App and I would listen to it over and over again!
