As someone that loves to read, I really wanted to find a way to monetize this hobby. I have been freelancing as a beta reader part-time for some time now and I absolutely love it. There is something so rewarding of working with an author to offer my insight into making their work even better. In this blog post, I will share my experience and how you can become one too!
What is a Beta Reader?
A Beta Reader is a person who reads a piece of writing before it is published in order to suggest improvements. Improvements can focus on the overall reading experience, but also how the story my flow. For example, I make suggestions to authors on reordering chapters or to expand on certain aspects of the story so that the reader has additional context.
A good Beta Reader is…
Be mindful that authors are trusting you with your words. As Erykah Badu has said, many artists are sensitive about their sh*. A good beta reader must be honest. You have to have the ability to provide honest feedback. You are being hired to give authors your most real and authentic reactions to their writing. Yet, one must also be tactful. Honesty is key, but do not offend! It is important to give authors constructive criticism that helps to make them better and not to tear them down. Lastly, be a good fit. It would be beneficial to be an expert in a particular genre or topic, but not mandatory. These are just a few suggestions that will help you on your beta reader journey.
When should an author get a Beta Reader?
A Beta Reader can be hired at any stage of your writing journey. I have read single chapters for authors as well as full manuscripts. It truly depends on the author’s needs. The feedback may be more useful when there is more to give feedback on, however, that can happen at any process.
Beta reading is a great way to be a part of the greater book community. If you are an avid reader, it exposes you to so many new bodies of work. For authors, beta reading is an affordable way to gain valuable insight into improving your work and making your story better.
