I am a big fan of Jasmine Guillory and her writing style. I have been hooked on her writing style and how Jasmine is able to write stories of fairytale romance. Jasmine Guillory’s books center women and their feelings and experiences when trying to find love and romance. Her latest release, Party of Two, adds to the series but does it meet my expectations and the hype?
Party of Two follows Olivia Monroe, sister of Alexa Monroe (The Wedding Date), as she falls in love with Senator Max Powell. Olivia is a lawyer, who took a leap of faith and started a new firm with her friend and is afraid of being thrown into the spotlight when dating someone as powerful as a Senator. That’s all I am giving because, as you should know by now, I do not give out spoilers.
For me, this book really didn’t make me feel as bubbly and happy as her previous books have. First, I believe that there was a disconnect between the characters that didn’t spark the chemistry that we normally see in her other novels. It was clear that Max definitely loved Olivia more than she loved him. I can see that Jasmine Guillory was trying to paint the picture of being consumed with work, life, and love but the love didn’t create the sparks for me. There was also a lot of fluff that could have been more entertaining or repurposed into more drama. I also think that my current mental space does not get me excited for interracial love. I did appreciate Jasmine’s subtle messaging around racism, sexism, privilege, and criminal justice. That was truly the highlight for me in this book.
I will always support Jasmine Guillory and her work because she is in a field where there are not many of us. While I did not care for this particular book that much, it was not bad. I just had greater expectations because I typically love her work.
