There are numerous things that you could spend money on. I would even argue that you should spend all of your money because why not. However, when we set realistic budgets, we know that we cannot buy everything. Here are the top 5 bookish things were the money.
- E-reader (I love my Kindle)
I am the biggest advocate for an e-reader. They are mobile so you have a book with you everywhere you go. E-readers also help to reduce paper use since, for me personally, I rarely re-read a book. They are also just so convenient. If you are going to spend money on something book related, I would highly recommend getting an e-reader. It took me some time to finally get a Kindle and I kick myself everyday for waiting so long. I have the Kindle Paperwhite and it has been one of the best purchases. I will say that it is bigger than other Kindle models but that just gives me more opportunities to decorate my Kindle with the most perfect Kindle inserts, stickers, and accessories.

- Kindle Unlimited
I have had a Kindle Unlimited subscription for many years now. There was once a point in time when I felt like I was wasting money because I was barely using it but then I tapped in. Many of the urban books I love are available on Kindle Unlimited and now that I actually have a Kindle, I think it’s the best $11.99 spent. I don’t spend money on books otherwise so I don’t mind the $144 a year.
- A book light
I love reading in the dark which is why I favor an e-reader. Although very rare, when I do read a physical book, using a book light allows me to read in the dark. My favorite book light can be found on Amazon. This rechargeable hands-free neck reading light is a must-have for book lovers. With adjustable brightness, multiple color modes, and a lightweight design, it’s perfect for bedtime reading but also for knitting, crocheting, crafting, and late-night study sessions.
- A remote for your e-reader
To truly create the cozy feel as you are reading, I highly recommend a remote page turner. In the colder months, it truly comes in handy when you want to be bundled under a blanket while reading. Most importantly, it’s good for hands-free reading. I initially bought a page turner when I was still reading on my iPad, and I have since switched to a Kindle page turner, and they are both worth it!
- A library card
The best thing on this list is actually FREE! I am the biggest advocate for a library card because it truly unlocks so many awesome advantages. My most favorite freebie from having a library card is the Libby app, which puts thousands of titles at your fingertips. I love that I can borrow a title for 21 days from my local library and send the digital version straight to my Kindle. I also use Hoopla, mainly for audiobooks. A library card also gives you access to tons of free resources like language learning tools and career building platforms (*resources are contingent on the state). I will continue advocating for library cards because they are worth it even if it is free!
